George D. Miller (USAF-Ref.), President
Lieutenant General George D. Miller retired from the US Air Force as Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Air Command. This was the culmination of a military career of 35 years. He had served as a Seaman Recruit in the US Navy prior to his selection for the US Naval Academy from which he was graduated in 1953. He was commissioned into the US Air Force at that time and served in various commands as a fighter pilot and reconnaissance pilot.
General Miller retired from the Air Force in 1984 to take up the leadership of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in 1984. During his tenure he successfully conducted one-on-one negotiations with President Fidel Castro to get the Cubans to participate in the 1987 Pan American games.
After leaving the USOC he became President/Executive Director of the Morris Animal Foundation which is dedicated to improving the health of companion animals. In 1992 to become President/CEO of the National Fire Protection Association in Quincy MA. Membership and revenues increased dramatically under his leadership. New coalitions were formed and old ones strengthened. Miller retired from NFPA in June 2002 and was named President Emeritus and Special Assistant to the President.
He continues as Chairman of the Confederation of Fire Protection Association- International (CFPA-I), and was elected as President of the World Organization of Building Officials (WOBO) at their May 2003 meeting in Dallas, TX.
